Auditions (2023)

The ND Symphony Orchestra welcomes auditions for members of all sections at any time during the school year, but most auditions and admissions to the ensemble take place at the beginning of each academic year. You have the option for the Fall of 2023 to audition either remotely or in person. There will be no preference given regarding admission to whichever audition method you choose. For both, prepare a short solo (c. 5 minutes in length) with which you feel comfortable, and that you feel best demonstrates your level. Etudes, excerpts, or a solo piece are all accepted -please contact Dan Stowe with any repertoire questions. You will not be asked to play scales or sightread. Please do not record your audition with accompaniment, even if your piece has one.

1) Remote Audition

Please video record your piece on your phone in landscape format and upload it to this folder. You all will have editing access to the folder; it is assumed that you will not abuse that access to look at the submissions of your colleagues. Please name your file according to the template "[your instrument]-[your last name]-NDSO2023", and begin your recording by saying your name, instrument, and the piece you are playing. Please also fill out this sheet as part of your audition, and upload it to this folder as a pdf file using the same "[your instrument]-[your last name]-NDSO2023" template. Please submit your video auditions and accompanying information sheets not later than Tuesday, August 22nd.

2) Live Audition

Live auditions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, August 23-24, 2022 beginning at 7pm in Room 328 of O'Neill Hall of Music.

If you would like to audition in person, please email Dan Stowe a message with a requested audition time, and you will be slotted as close to that time as possible (first come, first served) and will receive an email confirmation of your time. Please fill out an information sheet prior to your audition, either online (see above) or in person when you arrive for your audition. You will be able to warm up in the practice rooms on the 5th and 6th floors of O'Neill Hall. Please arrive early enough to complete the audition information sheet prior to your audition. If you wish to play a live audition and cannot make this time, please let Dan know as soon as you can and an alternate time will be set up during the preceding weekend.

Our first rehearsal will take place on Tuesday, August 29, at 8:15 PM at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center in Leighton Concert Hall.

Please contact director Dan Stowe (dstowe@nd.edu) if you have any additional questions.
